Dress & Reverence

During services, our church observes a traditional and modest standard of dress as an expression of reverence in worship. Men typically wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, while women usually wear long dresses and cover their heads with a scarf (shash). Both men and women often wear a white garment called a netela. All worshippers are expected to remove their shoes before entering the sanctuary, in keeping with the words of Scripture: “Take off your shoes from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5).

You may also notice that men and women often stand or sit separately during the service, with men typically on the left and women on the right. Families with children may stay together, and visitors should not feel pressured to follow every custom right away.

We understand that these traditions may be new to some visitors, and that is completely okay. For a first visit, dressing modestly and respectfully is more than enough. We want you to feel welcome, and we are always happy to answer any questions.

Participating

Services are ancient and beautiful. People stand for much of the service. You'll see people making the sign of the cross, bowing, and venerating icons. We understand it can be unfamiliar . Visitors are welcome to either join in  or simply stand and watch. Following the example of those around you is perfectly acceptable.

Language

Divine Liturgy is primarily in Ge'ez and Amharic, with parts  translated into English. There is  often a short sermon that is in English.

Children

Children are always welcome at our Church. We understand that children, especially young ones, may make noise. This is not a problem.
